Splitting pairs

Should I split 8s against an Ace?

Yes. Split a pair of 8s against an Ace when the dealer checks for blackjack first, which is how the game on these pages is dealt.

These answers are for a 6 deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, blackjack pays 3 to 2, and you can double on any two cards, including after a split.

Why

Because the dealer peeks, by the time you decide you already know the dealer does not have blackjack. Your extra bet is not lost to a hidden 10.

From there it is the same as against a 10: two hands from 8 lose less than one 16.

Questions players ask

Should I split 8s against an Ace?
Yes, in a game where the dealer peeks for blackjack.
What does it mean that the dealer peeks?
With an Ace or a 10 showing, the dealer checks the face down card before anyone plays. If it makes blackjack, the hand ends there.
